Discover the Recycling Process in Virtual Reality

In my third year at the University of Lethbridge, I joined the Agility program - an incubator of sorts that focuses on allowing students to pursue a project in their field while aiming it to impact their local community. For my project, I worked alongside Evan, a 3D modeler, to develop a virtual reality tour fly-though of the cities’ new recycling processing facility to safely facilitate tours for elementary schools.

This project for me was my second venture developing a project for a client in VR. The building is a 1:1 replica in scale, containing thousands of physics recyclable assets. These aspects along with the fact the machine files were thousands of AutoCAD components, this was a project that challenged the sense of immersion as well as my ability to optimise the project to meet VR specifications.

Work I’m most proud of:

  • Systems Engineering: Architected a robust object pooling system to efficiently manage thousands of active, physics-based recyclable assets in real-time.
  • Physics & Simulation: Developed versatile conveyor belt systems, utilizing both physics-driven and non-physics variants to accurately simulate the sorting process.
  • Performance Optimization: Executed rigorous optimizations across collision meshes, materials, and lighting to meet strict HTC Vive framerate requirements.
  • Cross-Discipline Integration: Partnered closely with a 3D artist to convert massive AutoCAD files into a seamless, 1:1 scale educational VR environment.
